SCIENTIFIC NAME :
TERMINALIA CATAPPA LEAVES
COMMON NAME :
INDIA ALMOND LEAVES, TROPICAL ALMOND LEAVES, SWEET ALMOND LEAVES, WILD ALMOND LEAVES, SEA ALMOND LEAVES, CATAPPA LEAVES, JAVA ALMOND LEAVES, KETAPANG LEAVES
Terminalia Catappa leaves are known to most, if not all Asian breeders of blackwater tropical fishes, to be one of the best water conditioners to promote healing and breeding. They are known to have antibacteria and antifungal properties. Bettas are known to be induced to spawn by just putting a few of the leaves into their tank. Fish suffering finrot or injuries (such as spawning injuries) will definitely benefit from having the leaves in their quarantine tank. But they can be used for the usual aquariums as well.
When soaked in water these leaves will leach a strong brown dye that is full of organic acids like humic acids and tannic acids. These are useful for inhibiting many types of bacteria as well as to detoxify harmful heavy metals found in the aquarium.
It is well-known, for example, that show bettas kept in a 1 gallon tank will require water changes every 2 or 3 days if mature untreated water is used. But when Terminalia Catappa Leaves are used the water change routine can be stretched to a week. Also, tubifex worms kept in tap water or even matured water will experience necrosis and stink within a day or two, whereas if they are kept in water treated with Terminalia Catappa Leaves (or extract), they will continue to thrive for up to a week without the water fouling up or becoming smelly.
Terminalia Catappa leaves are commonly used as follows :-
·
Some Aquarius use Terminalia Catappa
leaves all the time, while others use them only for special purposes, i.e. when the feel that their fish needs some extra pampering. It is especially common to use Terminalia Catappa leaves.
·
When setting up a new aquarium
·
When a new fish is introduced to an aquarium
·
To induce breeding, especially in Betta
·
When setting up and maintaining a fry aquarium
·
When a fish is sick, especially if the sickness affects the skin
·
In the plastic transport bag when a fish is moved to a new home
·
When keeping delicate fish species that are considered difficult to keep and breed in captivity
Advantages Using
Terminalia Catappa
Leaves for Shrimps/Fishes :-
·
Simulate black water condition which is the natural environment for the tropical fish and shrimps.
·
Cure sick fish of bacterial infections and to help speed up healing of damaged fins or body injuries. However it is not a magic "cure-all", especially when dealing with diseases like dropsy, velvet etc. think of it as more of a preventative medicine.
·
Enhance fertility of fishes
·
Contain humid acids and tannin's which have anti-bacterial & anti-fungal properties.
·
Contains chemical that will bind with ammonia in the water.
HOW TO PREPARE
1)
Keep your
Terminalia Catappa
leaves in a dry place at room temperature until you wish to use them. Dry leaves can be stored for at least 6 months in a suitable environment (preferably a container that is airtight, watertight and prevents light from entering).
2)
If the tree may have been sprayed with pesticides or grows in a big city with lots of pollution, rinse the
Terminalia Catappa
leaves well in tap water before placing it in your tank.
3)
Remove active carbon, purigen and similar from the aquarium before adding your Indian almond leaves.
4)
If you’re in a hurry, you can cut the leaves into smaller pieces since this will make them leach their content into the water more rapidly.
TIPS TO USE
TERMINALIA CATAPPA
LEAVES FOR YOUR SHRIMP :-
1)
For shrimp owners that like water to be yellow or light brown colour
·
Rinse under clean water, and then add to tank , after some time the water will turn a slight brownish , tarnish color
2)
For shrimp owners that do not like water become yellow or light brown color
·
Please boil them 30-60 minutes, After that put them in your shrimp/fish tank, They will not make water become yellow or brown color, and they will sink to the bottom so fast, Shrimp can eat them easily.
·
Removing the leaves after the shrimp come and feed on the leaves is not necessary as later the leaf will rot and provide a good grazing grounds for the shrimps where they will find micro nutrients in it.
DOSAGE
Dosages below are based on 15-25 cm (6-10 in) leaves. If your leaf is smaller or bigger, you need to adjust the figures accordingly.
1)
Using 2 leaves per 50 L (13 us gallons) of water is a good rule of thumb, but be prepared to adjust the dosage to suit your particular fish. Some Betta keepers routinely use up to 2 leaves per 15 L (4 us gallons) of water in their everyday tanks.
2)
Betta breeders normally use 1 leaf per 20 L (5 us gallons) of water in breeding tanks.
In fry rearing tanks, use 1 leaf per 40 L (10 us gallons) of water.
