Which Fish Aquariums Should Indian Almond Leaves Be Used In?
Betta fish and Shrimp tanks are particularly well suited to Almond Leaves. In fact, Betta breeders commonly use these leaves to breed and keep their fish. Indian Almond leaves create ideal water conditions for Betta fish, conditions that are very similar to their habitat.
So if you have a Betta fish, I recommend getting Almond Leaves. And if you have a Shrimp tank you will find many benefits as well. Shrimp will be well fed and use the leaves as coverage before they dissolve. Microorganisms also grow on the surface of Almond Leaves and shrimp will eat them up!
As I already mentioned, fry tanks are another type of aquarium that will benefit from Almond Leaves as well. There are tons of benefits that I outlined in the previous section. And if you want ideal fish breeding this is the product you will want to have on hand. Just make sure that your fish can handle lower Ph. and softer water!
How to Use Indian Almond Leaves?
There are many ways to prepare Indian Almond Leaves for your tank. But first, you want to make sure that your leaves are properly stored. They should be dry and kept in room temperature conditions.
In addition, if you think any pesticides were used on the leaves, rinse the leaves off. Make sure they dry off before you use them though. And check for any rot on the leave before you add them to your tank. Once you have done this, there are a few methods you can use to add leaves to a tank.
1. Put The Leaves Directly In Your Tank
The most simple method involves putting a few leaves in your tank. How many leaves you put in depends on what you are using them for. If you are trying to darken the water a little or make it healthier for fish, a few leaves will do. You can add more if you want though.
However, know that most Betta tanks and Fry tanks only need one or two leaves. This amount is good for five to ten-gallon tanks. Of course, this is up to your own discretion. And you should consider your tank size as well. Bigger tanks will need more leaves.
2. Shred Your Leaves
and
Put Them In
If you want a tank that truly imitates Backwater Rivers and habitats you can put in a lot of leaves though. Consider grinding or tearing up the leaves as well. When they are in pieces, the Almond leaves will provide you with the best results. It helps get Tannin's into the water at a more rapid pace. This will make the water darker fast!
The leaves will dissolve in the water. So there is no need to remove them, and really it’s better to let them stay in the water. If you have a shrimp tank and your pets eat up the leaves too fast you can also add in more leaves without issue.
3. Create
an
Extract or Soak The Leaves
However, not all tank owners like the look of leaves at the bottom of their tank. Indian Almond Leaves can take weeks and even months to dissolve fully. And even if the leaves eventually disappear some people don’t want leaf remnants resting in the water. If you want a cleaner tank look there are other options though.
You can soak separate water in the leaves. That water can be added into your tank later on.
Some people even like to boil the leaves and extract the Tannin from the leaves. By taking a few leaves and putting them in a pot you can get a lot of extract out of them! Just don’t put all the extract in the tank.
Add in the extract slowly, and use a little at a time! It’s not hard to get your tank dark and you don’t want to over saturate your tank with Tannin's or it will get way too tinted. But even if you add in too much extract or leaves, you can change some of your water easily.
If you choose the extraction method, you won’t have to deal with leave remnants. However, you will need the best quality leaves to use this method. If you don’t have the best Indian Almond Leaves though, you can always buy per-made extract.
